Looking after it
Fashion jewellery is plated, not solid. Treated well it keeps its colour for years; treated badly it will dull in a season. The difference is mostly habit.
The one rule
Last on, first off. Put your jewellery on after perfume, hairspray, sunscreen and moisturiser have dried, and take it off before you wash, swim, sleep or exercise. Almost every case of early tarnishing comes from skipping this.
Day to day
- Wipe each piece with a dry, soft cloth after wearing it — sweat is more corrosive than water.
- Store pieces separately, in the pouch or box they arrived in. Stones scratch plating, and plating scratches stones.
- Keep them dry. A sealed box in a humid month does more good than anything else on this page.
- Never use toothpaste, baking soda or silver dip on plated jewellery. They strip the plating rather than clean it.
By finish
Gold-tone plating
Dulls with friction and acidity. Avoid stacking rings and bangles that rub, and take pieces off before cooking with citrus or vinegar.
Oxidised silver-tone
The dark finish is deliberate and sits in the recesses. Polishing hard will brighten the raised areas and flatten the design — wipe, don't scrub.
Kundan, meena and stone-set
Stones are set with lac or adhesive, not prongs. Keep them away from heat and water, and never soak them — soaking is the most common way a stone is lost.
